Living and working in Ireland – but your husband/wife lives abroad?
You could be due additional tax credits and a refund from what is called Non Resident Aggregation Relief.
This benefit is recognition that you support a spouse living in a different country and can be worth as much as €3,450 – depending on circumstances. Over a 4 year claim this can add up to €13,800.
Claiming this tax relief may involve supplying Revenue with proof of your spouses income.
While complicated to claim, this tax relief is one of the best available for normal PAYE employees!
Example
Jose is from Brazil, living in Ireland 5 years.
He is married to Margarita who is still living in Brazil and has no income.
As Jose paid tax in Ireland in all of the last 4 years, we can claim up to an additional €3,450 of tax credits in each of those years.
Jose is due a potential refund for the 4 years of €13,800.
If Jose also pays for the Medical Expenses of family in Brazil, he could also claim 20% of those costs against his taxes in Ireland
AND If Jose is financially supporting Elderly relatives in his home country he could also claim Dependent Relative Tax Credits for further refunds.
