From Household Bill to Property Tax

As expected, it was announced today that a household charge will be introduced as a temporary measure until a value based property tax solution, expected to be proposed sometime in the second half of 2012.

The Household charge will be €100.

Revenue generated from this charge will go to Local authorities.  From details published in the Irish Independent 6th December, the charge will be applied to the home owner.  Some exemptions will apply for people in receipt of Mortgage Interest.  Previously it was thought the charge may be applied to the principal tenant of the property.

The charge must be paid by the end of next march.  Payments can also be made by installment, while late payment penalties will be charged.
